$2 million grant will create programs to help state’s ESL educators
The programming created from this grant will allow TCNJ to train the state’s educators to meet the“linguistic, social, and academic needs” of the state’s language minority students.
TCNJ’s Teaching English as a Second Language Program received a $2 million federal grant to provide ESL certification programs, multilingual education programs, and a series of summer workshops for educators working with English language learners. First up is a three-day Summer ESL Academy that will be held on campus in July.
According to the New Jersey Department of Education, there are more than 279,000 language minority students in the state’s public schools. “New Jersey continues to grow as a home for thousands of immigrants from around the world,” said Yiqiang Wu, associate professor of special education, language, and literacy, who applied for the grant. The programming created from this grant will allow TCNJ to train the state’s educators to meet the“linguistic, social, and academic needs” of these populations.
