Empowering the Future: Expanding Equitable College and Career Counseling for Students with Disabilities

This multiyear initiative is dedicated to addressing long-standing disparities in college and career counseling for students with disabilities — an important yet frequently overlooked social justice concern. Under the leadership of Stuart Roe, PhD, a counselor educator and Global Career Development Facilitator, the project draws upon extensive hands-on experience working with high school students, young mothers entering the workforce, and communities across New Jersey. Despite the critical role that special education case managers and learning consultants play in guiding students with disabilities through “transition services,” most of these professionals receive little or no formal training in comprehensive college and career counseling. Similarly, many school counselors have limited preparation for addressing the unique needs of students with disabilities — leading to disparities in educational attainment, career readiness, and long-term well-being.

Despite the critical role that special education case managers and learning consultants play in guiding students with disabilities through “transition services,” most receive little or no formal training in comprehensive college and career counseling. Similarly, many school counselors have limited preparation for addressing the unique needs of students with disabilities — leading to disparities in educational attainment, career readiness, and long-term well-being.

Over three years, this project will:

  1. Assess Needs – Conduct statewide surveys of school counselors and special educators to identify gaps in training, resources, and support.
  2. Deliver Targeted Training – Partner with special education faculty to create professional learning modules for educators, parents, and caregivers using a “train-the-trainer” approach to build sustainable capacity.
  3. Create a Graduate Certificate Program – Launch a specialized, stackable credential that equips future counselors and special educators with the skills to provide equitable, high-quality college and career counseling.

By blending research, professional development, and innovative curriculum design, this work will empower schools, families, and communities to ensure that every student — regardless of disability status — has access to the guidance needed to thrive in education, career, and life.
